Dog fee
A local fee for keeping a dog older than 3 months. The municipality sets the rate by ordinance; the law caps it at CZK 1,500 a year.
The dog fee is a local fee under Section 2 of Act No. 565/1990 Coll. on local fees. It is paid by the keeper of a dog older than 3 months to the municipality where the keeper is registered as resident, or where a company has its seat. The municipality introduces the fee by municipal ordinance, setting the rate, the due date and the deadline for registering the dog. It does not have to introduce it at all.
How much the fee can be
- at most CZK 1,500 per calendar year per dog
- at most CZK 200 a year for a dog kept by a person over 65
- for a second and each further dog of the same keeper up to 50% more, i.e. at most CZK 2,250, or CZK 300 for a senior
Rates may also vary within a municipality. The Ministry of the Interior allows different rates, for example depending on whether the dog lives in an apartment building or a family house, or by locality.
Who is exempt
The law exempts a keeper who is blind, is considered dependent on the help of another person, holds a ZTP or ZTP/P disability card, trains dogs to assist such people, runs an animal shelter, or is required to keep a dog by a specific regulation. The municipality may add further exemptions and reductions by ordinance. The entitlement to an exemption must be reported to the municipality in time, otherwise it lapses.
Example
An illustrative example: the municipality charges CZK 600 for the first dog and CZK 900 for each further one. A family with two dogs pays 600 + 900 = CZK 1,500 a year. If they get a dog in September and it is already older than 3 months, the fee is paid pro rata for the started months of September to December: 600 × 4/12 = CZK 200.
