ZUŠ - basic art school
A school teaching music, dance, visual arts and drama alongside regular school. It teaches children and adults, for a fee and after an aptitude test.
A basic art school (ZUŠ, „základní umělecká škola“) provides, under Section 109 of the Czech Education Act, basic education in the arts and also prepares pupils for arts-oriented secondary schools and conservatories. Under Decree No. 71/2005 Coll., a ZUŠ may offer music, dance, visual arts and literary-dramatic (drama) departments. Pupils attend alongside regular school, and adults can study there too.
How the study is organised
- preparatory course: up to 2 years, for children from 5
- basic study, first level: 7 years, from age 7
- basic study, second level: 4 years, from age 14
- study for adults: up to 4 years
Applicants for the preparatory course must show aptitude for learning. Admission to basic study and study for adults is based on an aptitude test and the recommendation of an admission committee; the school publishes the test dates at least 14 days in advance.
Fees
Education at a ZUŠ is not free. At schools run by the state, a region or a municipality, the head teacher sets the fee for each school year, within limits set by the decree based on the school's costs. It can be paid annually, per term, quarterly or monthly; each school publishes its exact fees and terms.
What it means for families
A ZUŠ has no catchment area: school districts are set only for nursery and primary schools (see catchment school). Every school has a maximum permitted number of pupils recorded in the school register, so places in popular departments can be competitive. A ZUŠ within walking distance is part of the local amenities that families value, as there is no need to drive children to activities.
Frequently asked questions
Who runs a ZUŠ?
The Education Act expressly allows municipalities and associations of municipalities to set up a ZUŠ. All schools, their departments and maximum pupil numbers are listed in the register of schools and school facilities.
Is a ZUŠ the same as an after-school club?
No. A ZUŠ is a school recorded in the school register, with a framework curriculum, assessment and school reports. Clubs tend to be less formal. For younger children before school age there are other options such as a children's group. The nearest ZUŠ and the way there are shown in the location analysis.
