Cable internet (CATV)

Fixed internet over the coaxial wiring of a cable TV network, with a cable modem at the user's end.

CATV (Community Antenna Television) is cable TV wiring. The same coaxial cable that brings television into a house or flat can also carry internet; the user needs a cable modem. The Czech Telecommunication Office lists CATV as one of the fixed access technologies alongside xDSL and FWA and fibre.

Where you find it

Cable networks are mostly in towns and in housing-estate apartment blocks, less often in family houses on the edge of villages. Speeds are usually higher than over a phone line and close to fibre, but depend on the age of the network and the number of users on its segment.

What to watch out for

  • ČTÚ data on the technology at an address say the network is available in the area, not that a connection is already in the flat or house.
  • For a family house, check with the provider whether the house is already connected or a new connection would need to be built.
