Municipal waste fee
A local fee covering waste collection, paid per registered resident (max. CZK 1,200 a year) or by the amount of waste from a property.
The municipal waste fee is a local fee under Act No. 565/1990 Coll. on local fees. A municipality introduces it by municipal ordinance and may use only one of the two statutory variants for any given year. The ordinance sets the rate, due date, any reductions and reporting deadlines.
Two variants of the fee
- The fee for the municipal waste system is paid by every person registered as resident in the municipality. For a flat, family house or holiday home where nobody is registered, the owner pays. The law caps it at CZK 1,200 per person per year.
- The fee for depositing municipal waste from a property is calculated by the weight or volume of waste deposited, or by the ordered bin capacity. It is paid by the people living in the property, or by the owner if nobody lives there. The cap is CZK 6 per kilogram or CZK 1 per litre. The fee is collected from residents and passed to the municipality by the owners' association (SVJ), or by the building owner where there is none.
Example
An illustrative example for the first variant: the municipality's rate is CZK 1,000 a year. A family of four registered all year pays 4 × 1,000 = CZK 4,000. Someone who registers in July was not registered at the end of January to June; the fee is reduced by six twelfths for those months, so they pay 1,000 × 6/12 = CZK 500.
What to watch out for
The obligation arises from registration in the municipality or from owning a flat or house where nobody is registered, so it also applies to cottages and empty flats. The law exempts some people, such as residents of care homes for the elderly, and the municipality may add further exemptions and reductions by ordinance. For late payment, the municipality may add an increase of up to twice the unpaid amount. Together with the dog fee and property tax, it is one of the regular payments linked to a property.
Frequently asked questions
Does the owner of a rented flat pay the fee?
Under the first variant, tenants pay if they are registered at the flat; if nobody is registered there, the owner pays. Under the second variant, whoever lives in the flat pays, and the owner or SVJ collects the fee.
Where can I find out how much the fee is?
In the municipality's ordinance in the official Collection of legal regulations of municipalities and regions, or on the municipality's website. Rates may change from year to year.
