Net migration

The difference between people who moved into a municipality and those who moved out. A positive figure means migration adds residents.

Net migration („saldo stěhování“, statistically the increase by migration) is the difference between the number of people who moved into an area and those who moved out over a given period, usually a calendar year. Together with natural change, i.e. live births minus deaths, it gives the total population change. The Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) publishes the figures for every municipality in its demographic database, going back to 1971.

Where the figures come from

In the statistics, a move means a change of permanent residence from one municipality to another or across the Czech border; for foreigners, a change of long-term residence. ČSÚ takes the data from administrative sources of the Ministry of the Interior, i.e. the population register and the foreigners' information system. Besides Czech citizens, the population includes foreigners with permanent residence and foreigners with long-term or registered temporary residence.

How to read the figure

A positive balance over several years shows that people are moving into the municipality. It is often a sign of demand for housing, good accessibility or new construction, for example in new development areas. A negative balance means more people leave than arrive. The figure is one of the inputs from which the location analysis builds a picture of who lives there and how the municipality is developing.

What to watch out for

  • In a small municipality, a single new apartment building or street of family houses can shift the number a lot, so a total over several years says more than one year.
  • The figure is based on reported changes of residence, so moves without re-registration are not captured.
  • The balance says nothing about age or where people come from.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between net migration and total population change?

Total change is the sum of net migration and natural change. A municipality can grow through migration even if more people die there than are born, and vice versa.

Why is net migration shown only sometimes?

On a property website the figure is shown only when it is positive and makes sense as information about demand for housing in the municipality. More detailed figures are in the Location Check for agents.

Want this information on your property's website?

We find, analyse and clearly present data about the place. On the website for clients and in the location check for the agent - depending on the nature of the information.

The explanation is general and informative, not legal advice. Binding are the land register, the zoning plan and other official sources.
