Connecting solar panels to the grid (export, notification)
A plant up to 10.8 kW only needs notifying to the distributor; up to 100 kW for own use needs no licence. Distributor maps hint at export.
Under the Czech Energy Act, solar panels or a battery on a family house are a power plant or an energy storage facility. A customer may operate one at their supply point if no other plant is connected there, the installed capacity does not exceed 100 kW and a connection contract with the distributor is in place.
Notification, contract and licence
- Up to 10.8 kW, the customer is entitled to connect and operate the plant on the basis of a notification to the distributor. They must meet and document the technical connection conditions; if the distributor does not refuse within 30 days on grounds set by law, the connection contract is extended to the plant.
- Above 10.8 kW, a connection application is filed and a new or amended contract is concluded.
- Since August 2025, no licence from the Energy Regulatory Office is needed for plants up to and including 100 kW if the electricity is for use on site or for free sharing (the limit used to be 50 kW).
- Under the Building Act, renewable energy installations up to 100 kW are minor structures that do not need a permit; exceptions apply, for example in specially protected areas.
Export and grid capacity
Export (přetoky) means electricity the plant sends into the distribution grid when the house is not using it. Distributors publish indicative maps of free grid capacity. Where capacity is lacking, connection is often possible only with limited export or none. The map is just a guide; the binding answer comes with the processing of the application or notification. Family houses are connected at low voltage and the capacity of the local grid is managed by the distributor.
Frequently asked questions
I am buying a house with solar panels. What should I ask for?
The connection contract (or confirmation of the notification), the installed and reserved capacity, the inspection report for the installation and any contract for selling exported power. When the house changes hands, the contracts with the distributor and the electricity trader need to be moved to the new owner; it is best to check the procedure with the distributor in advance.
Is solar related to the breaker?
Indirectly, yes. More power for a heat pump or car charging often means a larger main circuit breaker. Increasing the reserved capacity costs a contribution paid to the distributor, CZK 800 per amp for a three-phase low-voltage connection.
